Watch The Reader’s Digest Escalator Interview with Author Lynn Painter

Perfectly timed banter and slow-burn tension are both hallmarks of a Lynn Painter love story. The New York Times bestselling author is a BookTok favorite for her rom-com-worthy plots and heartfelt romances, from Better Than the Movies to The Do-Over to Mr. Wrong Number. Her popular 2025 hockey romance, Fake Skating, is even coming to the big screen in 2027. Now, Painter is back with Trust Fall, and she has a pretty irresistible elevator pitch for it: “Trust Fall is like a rags-to-riches rom-com,” she tells us. Think: “Gilmore Girls meets Gossip Girl, with a lot of New York and fall on the side.” In other words: romance, big-city energy, autumn vibes and plenty of Painter’s signature wit.

For this episode of The Reader’s Digest Escalator Interview, we caught up with Painter to talk about Trust Fall, her life as a romance writer and, naturally, all the bookish questions we really wanted answers to. She shared the first romance novel she ever fell in love with, made a case for the genre she thinks deserves a little more attention and revealed her favorite character in a love story—and here’s a hint: You’ll find this one dancing through La La Land. We also got into the stories and characters that have made readers fall for her books again and again, as well as what keeps her falling for a great romance.

Will Cicadas Destroy Your Garden? 10 Things You Need to Know

It’s easy to wince thinking about the mass emergence of insects like cicadas. Their numbers can reach millions per acre, creating a near-deafening buzzing chorus. So it’s understandable that questions like, “Will cicadas eat my plants?” immediately spring to mind. But cicadas are also pretty fascinating and play important roles in the ecosystem. “Cicadas inspire wonder in our world!” says Jennifer Hopwood, senior pollinator conservation specialist at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. “They spend most of their life underground next to the same plant roots. Somehow, these creatures are able to track the years that pass by and time their emergence with other periodical cicadas in the region to overwhelm predators. They are amazing little critters.” Here’s a rundown of what to know about cicadas, good and bad, including whether or not they eat plants and how to protect your trees during an emergence.
