Cooks have long loved the distinctive whoosh of firing up a gas stove. The flames pop up quickly and provide consistent heat, making it easy to cook with pinpoint control. Gas stoves also save the day if you need to cook when the power’s out because they don’t require electricity (for the cooking part, anyway). As a cook and an electrician, I wouldn’t give up mine for anything.
Unfortunately, gas stoves hide lurking dangers behind that satisfying flame. One major problem is air quality. We’ll dig into the specifics below, but in a recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, researchers found that nearly 13% of childhood asthma in the United States is caused directly by gas stoves. And that’s just one of the findings.
Even a perfectly functioning gas stove gives off invisible fumes. But keeping your eyes peeled for odd flame colors can help you diagnose major safety risks before they get out of hand. To find out more about gas stoves and safety, I spoke to Troy Legg, a virtual appliance technician with home-warranty company American Home Shield. He has more than 20 years of experience repairing appliances, including gas stoves, and knows exactly what color the flames should be.

What color “should” the flames be on a gas stove?
“A healthy gas-burner flame is usually blue,” Legg says. There’s room for a tiny bit of variation, but not much. “With natural gas, a blue flame with a slight white tip can be normal,” Legg adds. “With liquid propane, a blue flame with a small yellow tip can also be normal.”
But if most of the flame, not just the tip, turns a different color, that’s a signal that something is wrong.
What makes the flames blue?

Blue flames indicate that complete combustion of natural gas is taking place. Natural gas is mostly methane, and when it burns correctly on your stove, all of the fuel gets used up and turned into heat, water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO2). The flames are blue because the light produced within this clean-burning flame has a short wavelength. (Remember the ROYGBIV of a rainbow? The red side has longer wavelengths, and the blue-indigo-violet side has shorter ones.)
Natural gas produces a very hot flame—as high as 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit. In contrast, wood fires burn cooler and less cleanly, giving off soot and wood particles. It’s these particles that produce the campfire-like orange and red flames you should never see on your gas cooktop.
What do orange flames mean?
“A steady yellow or orange flame can signal incomplete combustion, often caused by dirty burners, blocked openings or an improper gas-to-air mixture,” Legg says. Instead of methane converting to CO2 and water vapor, some of the gas is not used and is released into the air, which is not ideal.
But not all situations are reason to panic. “A small amount of white or yellow tipping can be normal depending on the type of gas and the appliance,” Legg says. Dust in the air can create brief yellow flickers, and he says calcium and other minerals may burn orange. “But a flame that is mostly yellow, orange or red should be checked by a professional.”
Why are orange and yellow flames such a big problem?
Because blue flames are the normal state of affairs, the sudden appearance of orange or yellow means your stove is trying to tell you something. Here’s why these flames can be a big problem.
Dangerous gas buildup
“A steady yellow or orange flame may mean the burner is dirty or the gas and air are not mixing properly,” Legg says. Either one can “affect combustion and potentially create a carbon monoxide (CO) risk,” he says. According to the EPA, the air around a properly working gas stove contains about 5 to 15 parts per million (ppm) of CO, and a poorly adjusted one can have levels of 30 ppm or higher.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that kills hundreds of people every year and sends 100,000 to the emergency room, according to the CDC. Children are particularly vulnerable, as are the elderly and people with breathing conditions. If you have a gas stove, putting in a CO monitor to alert you of high CO levels can be a lifesaver.
Higher gas bills
Orange flames are inefficient and will cost you money. In incomplete combustion, some of the gas coming out of your burners is flat-out wasted, so you have to use more gas to get the right amount of heat for cooking. That will translate into a higher gas bill over time.
Lower air quality
Besides dangerous CO buildup, gas stoves are also known to contribute to poor indoor-air quality more generally (remember that asthma stat). Methane, nitrogen dioxide, benzene and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from even well-functioning stoves, and if your stove burns inefficiently, it gives off more of them.
Inefficient cooking
This one’s not dangerous, but it could be disappointing if you’re hungry. Gas flames that are uneven or inefficiently burning, which often happens when you’re seeing those orange or yellow flames, can create hot spots, make you crank up the heat and otherwise decrease the quality of your cooking experience.
What other colors signify an issue?

Legg says the main one to watch out for is red. “A red flame is less common and could point to an issue with gas quality, so homeowners should contact their gas provider if they see a persistent red flame,” he says. Gas-quality problems can include a range of issues, from an inconsistent delivery pressure to the presence of impurities that affect how the gas burns.
Another interesting twist involves the presence of a humidifier in your home. Humidifiers give off water vapor, of course, but that vapor also carries minerals like calcium and potassium. Legg mentioned calcium’s orange color earlier, but also be on the lookout for potassium’s pink or purple hue. Though these color changes are not dangerous, using distilled water will reduce these effects.
What should you do if your flames are the wrong color?
“Start with basic cleaning and inspection,” Legg says. “Make sure the burner cap is seated correctly, then check the burner openings for food, grease or debris.” Turn all knobs to the off position and remove the burner caps and heads. “A paper clip can be used gently to clear blocked burner holes and the small center orifice,” Legg says. Don’t use a wooden toothpick—it might break off, which could block the port and cause gas to back up.
You can also wash the parts of the burner assembly, but avoid soaking them. “Use a damp cloth instead of a soapy or wet cloth, since excess moisture can get into the spark switches and cause unwanted sparking,” Legg says. “After cleaning, make sure all parts are completely dry and properly reassembled before trying the burner again.”
“If the flame remains yellow, orange or red, or if there is any gas smell, stop using the appliance and contact a qualified repair technician or the gas provider,” Legg says. “An unusual flame color or smell can indicate a serious matter and potential safety risk. So if you notice something questionable, don’t wait to contact a professional or your gas provider.”
