Chilipad Review: This Smart Bed Cooling System Is My Secret to Deep Sleep in Summer

For most of my life, I’ve enjoyed blissful, refreshing sleep. Once I hit 30, things changed. Suddenly, I could no longer self-regulate my temperature at night. Almost overnight, I went from glorious, restful sleep to ripping off my sweat-soaked sheets and changing my pajamas in the middle of the night. I woke up each morning dehydrated, confused and desperately searching for relief.

I tried everything: cooling sheets, blankets, you name it. While they worked fine for the non-summer months, they did nothing for me in sweltering temperatures. Eventually, I began looking at proper bed cooling systems. One specific product, known as the Sleep.me Chilipad, caught my eye. The prospect of lying on a network of cooling water tunnels sounded like something out of science fiction, but I was willing to try anything by that point.

And folks, I’m so glad I made the leap. Here’s my experience testing the Chilipad—and why I’m a customer for life.

Chilipad 2.0 Bed Cooling System

Using a water-filled hydrolayer, the Chilipad sleep system ensures sleepers stay cool throughout the night.

What is the Chilipad?

Formerly called the Chilipad Dock Pro, the Chilipad 2.0 is a clever solution for overheated snoozers. The Chilipad comes in several parts, including a dock (which looks a bit like our family projector), hose, mattress cover and—the pièce de résistance—the hydrolayer insert.

Together, these pieces connect to create a mattress topper. The topper contains a network of cooling water channels, and these channels pull the heat from your body to the water. Then, the water is pumped back into the dock to cool down, where it’s then recycled back into the hydrolayer for further cooling magic.

How we tested it

I originally tested the original Chilipad Dock Pro in the summer of 2025. Recently, I received the Chilipad 2.0, which is the newest generation of Sleep.me’s bed cooling system. The operation is largely the same, though the 2.0 offers a few new bells and whistles compared to the original Dock Pro. For this piece, I’ll focus on the 2.0, since the Dock Pro is currently being phased out.

When I first unpacked the Chilipad, I was a little intimidated by all the connectors and gizmos. However, running it for the first time is surprisingly easy, especially using the included guide. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Strip your bed of everything, including mattress protectors
  2. Tuck the mattress cover over the mattress and unzip it
  3. Fit the hydrolayer inside
  4. Fasten the clips on the top and bottom of both the hydrolayer and mattress protector so both stay securely in place
  5. Locate the water hose opening in the mattress cover and feed the hose through
  6. Connect both ends of the hose to the hydrolayer and dock
  7. Zip up the cover and make the bed
  8. Plug the dock’s power cord into an electrical outlet
  9. Plug the remote dial into an electrical outlet
  10. Power on the dock and the dial

From there, the dock screen will prompt you to add a full packet of system cleaner and distilled water until the ‘low water’ icon disappears.

Once set up, I turned the remote dial to my preferred 73ºF. The dock immediately gets to work cooling the water and pumping it into the hydrolayer. While it’s not entirely silent, the noise level is low enough not to disturb me as I sleep. However, both the dock and hydrolayer pump get noisier when it’s about time to add more water.

You know that wonderful feeling when you slip between two cold sheets? Having the Chilipad is like enjoying that feeling all night long. It takes a night or two to get used to the sensation of the water moving below you, but after some adjustment, I found it rather soothing.

I used my original Chilipad Dock Pro throughout last summer, and my new Chilipad 2.0 nearly every single night during the last month. Incredibly, I haven’t had a single night sweat while using this device. During some chillier summer nights I have tried sleeping without my Chilipad turned on. But I ended up humbled each time by sweaty pajamas. For me, the Chilipad is absolutely essential for a good night’s sleep.

Cleaning

Each Chilipad comes with several packages of system cleaner to get you started. Overall, the device is also surprisingly low maintenance. I top it up with distilled water when the low water icon appears on the dock. Every month, just add a packet of system cleaner to keep bacteria at bay. You’ll also want to “deep clean” the dock by draining and refilling it every three to six months.

Pros

  • Provides instant relief for hot sleepers
  • Super easy to use and install
  • No subscription required
  • With the remote, you don’t need the app (but it’s nice to have)
  • The two-layer system offers a built-in mattress protector
  • 3-year warranty included

Cons

  • Not loud, but also not silent
  • Pricey—especially for full bed systems
  • Requires space for the dock

Original Chilipad Dock Pro

The newest Chilipad 2.0 version offers a mattress protector and bedside “remote,” which are the biggest changes since the Dock Pro. These small adjustments make a big impact on the overall experience. The Dock Pro’s hydrolayer has a built-in cover, rather than the 2.0’s zipped full bed protector. Two elastic bands run from the top of the hydrolayer to the bottom and slide under the mattress, keeping everything in place. While functional, it does move around more than the new version, which clips securely into place inside of the mattress protector.

With the new remote dial, there’s no need to fire up your app for temperature changes. The mattress protector creates a comfortable layer between you and the hydrolayer. It also allows for better adjustment to a variety of mattress heights thanks to adjustable clips on the top and bottom. This thicker layer gives me more peace of mind against any punctures or leaks that could occur. That said, I still don’t let my cats onto the bed in case they pierce the Chilipad with their claws.

Long-term testing

While I’m still in the process of testing the new Chilipad 2.0 long term, the original Chilipad Dock Pro I used last summer still works well. I set it up on my husband’s side of the bed and everything still runs smoothly, even after six months of storage. It just required a new packet of system cleaner to get up and running.

That said, storage isn’t super straightforward if you plan on packing it up between seasons. First, you have to drain the machine, lest water and bacteria harm the interior of the dock. Not only do you then have to store the pad (which is already quite difficult), but you also have to find space to store the unit itself. And the unit is pretty sizable and heavy, so it requires a dedicated space.

Going forward, I plan on keeping both Chilipads on our bed year-round. While I won’t use mine much in the winter, my husband gets cold very easily and plans on using the original Dock Pro to keep his side of the bed warm.

Product comparison: Chilipad vs. Bedjet vs. Eight Sleep

Our product testers have also tried the Eight Sleep Pod 3 (there’s now a fifth generation) and the Eight Sleep mattress Pod Cover, along with the Bedjet cooling system. While these options all work well, there are many key differences between them. Here’s how they compare at a glance:

  • The Bedjet, unlike Eight Sleep and the Chilipad, uses air rather than water for cooling
  • The Bedjet is the most budget-friendly, but also the noisiest
  • Eight Sleep products require a monthly subscription to access all the features—they’re also the priciest option
  • While there’s an app for both the Bedjet and Chilipad, they’re not required for use
  • Unlike Chilipad and Bedjet, Eight Sleep’s cooling systems also come with trackers to gather sleep data
  • All options have a clunky dock that might not fit under the bed

Final verdict

As someone who suffers from night sweats, being able to sleep peacefully throughout the night isn’t just nice—it’s transformative. The relief I get from my Chilipad has genuinely improved my quality of life. Yes, I get more sleep on average now, but according to my sleep tracker it’s also better quality sleep. Waking up refreshed rather than sluggishly pulling myself out of bed each morning affects my whole day in a positive way. And the best part? There’s no monthly subscription needed!

If you find yourself tossing and turning from an overly warm bed, splurging on a bed cooling system like the Chilipad makes a night and day difference. Sure, it’s pricey, but the improvement in sleep quality is absolutely priceless. Plus, it makes for a much cleaner and less stressful sleep environment. I am not exaggerating when I say that I used to wash my sheets every night. Since using the Chilipad, I’ve had zero instances of night sweats. Zero!

Where to buy the Chilipad

Chilipad 2.0 Bed Cooling System

For folks with frequent night sweats, the Chilipad 2.0 is like having a personal air conditioner for your mattress.

If you want to say goodbye to the night sweats for good, the Chilipad 2.0 and Dock Pro are both available on Sleep.me’s website. The 2.0 bundle—which includes the remote, dock, hydrolayer and mattress cover—retails for $1,500 to $1,800 for a single side, depending on the size of the bed. While pricey (especially for those who require full bed coverage for a second sleeper), the lack of a subscription model means that you only have to pay a single flat fee for all the features.

While you can still snag the Dock Pro at a slight discount, it’s currently being phased out, so I recommend investing in the newer version for the best experience.

Will Cicadas Destroy Your Garden? 10 Things You Need to Know

It’s easy to wince thinking about the mass emergence of insects like cicadas. Their numbers can reach millions per acre, creating a near-deafening buzzing chorus. So it’s understandable that questions like, “Will cicadas eat my plants?” immediately spring to mind. But cicadas are also pretty fascinating and play important roles in the ecosystem. “Cicadas inspire wonder in our world!” says Jennifer Hopwood, senior pollinator conservation specialist at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. “They spend most of their life underground next to the same plant roots. Somehow, these creatures are able to track the years that pass by and time their emergence with other periodical cicadas in the region to overwhelm predators. They are amazing little critters.” Here’s a rundown of what to know about cicadas, good and bad, including whether or not they eat plants and how to protect your trees during an emergence.
