You know the one: the look you pull out when you want to walk into a room and let your ex, your former boss or honestly anyone who underestimated you know, without saying a single word, that you’re doing just fine. It’s why the idea of the revenge dress has stuck around for decades, from Princess Diana’s now-iconic little black dress to the countless post-breakup outfits many of us have strategically worn to a random run-in we hoped might happen. It’s petty, maybe. But it’s also kind of awesome.
Lately, though, that same energy has moved beyond your closet and straight to your makeup bag. There’s a new revenge trend taking over, and it has nothing to do with finding the perfect dress. It’s a beauty move—one I’ve tried myself and absolutely love!

What’s the new “revenge” trend?
It’s called “revenge eyeliner,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like: eyeliner so sharp, dramatic and intentionally over-the-top that it feels like armor. Think: a bold black wing extended past your usual flick, often paired with a second graphic line above the crease or along the outer corner to create a doubled, almost feline effect.
The whole point of a revenge look is making an entrance that says, “I’m unbothered and somehow hotter than ever,” and this eyeliner design does exactly that. What makes it even better is how ridiculously affordable it is. A solid liquid liner from the drugstore can run anywhere from about $8 to $15, and even a pricier Sephora option usually lands around $20 to $30. Compare that to the classic revenge dress, which can easily set you back $80 to $300—and much, much more if you’re channeling full Princess Diana energy.
Where did this trend come from?
The phrase revenge eyeliner came straight out of Euphoria. The term was coined by the show’s head makeup artist, Donni Davy, to describe an unforgettable look worn by Alexa Demie’s character, Maddy Perez. If you’ve watched the show, you know Maddy has always delivered when it comes to makeup—her rhinestones, graphic liner and cat eyes have practically become characters of their own. But this look hit differently.
In Season 3, Episode 2, there’s a major pool scene where Maddy sees Cassie for the first time in years, and the tension is immediate. Given their history (and the betrayal hanging in the air), subtle wasn’t going to cut it. Maddy shows up in what fans quickly dubbed the ultimate revenge makeup: double liner featuring an ultra-sharp wing on top and a super crisp line on the bottom. It was enough to let everyone know she came prepared for that reunion.
The actual design was created by makeup artist Mara Rouse, who worked with Demie on the look, and the second the screenshots hit social media, fans lost it. Instagram comments under Davy’s makeup tutorial about the look were full of people declaring it their favorite Maddy beauty moment ever, with one fan writing, “This look is one of my favorites!! So fierce, so stunning, literally everything for her comeback.”
Where else have we seen this trend?
As new as revenge eyeliner sounds, the look itself is pure throwback. Dramatic black liner has been the unofficial beauty language of “don’t mess with me” for decades. Just think about Grease, when Sandy stepped out in that final scene with tight black pants and heavy double-winged eyeliner. It was basically the original beauty revenge moment. Years later, Aaliyah had a similar look as Akasha in Queen of the Damned, with razor-sharp eye makeup that was as dangerous as her character. Halle Berry had her own switch-up in Catwoman, when Patience went from shy and overlooked to full alter ego the second she slipped into the catsuit—paired with dark, smoky eye makeup.
Part of why it feels so showstopping right now is because beauty trends went in the opposite direction for a while. Since the 2010s, everything has been about looking effortless—glowy skin, fluffy brows, barely there makeup. Search online and it’s pretty clear people are still obsessed with that natural, clean-girl aesthetic.

If you want to recreate Maddy’s revenge-eyeliner look at home, Davy shared a step-by-step tutorial on Instagram to help us all out. We’ve made it even easier by breaking it into a few simple steps you can actually follow without pausing the video every five seconds.
What you’ll need:
- Matte brown eyeshadow stick
- Eyeshadow brush
- Taupe eyeshadow palette
- Half Magic The Wing Hack Set (Magic Flik Liquid Eyeliner, Wing Magician Silicone Guide and Flik Eraser)
- Half Magic Eyelectric Extreme Lengthening Mascara (Urchin)
How to do it:
1. Start with a matte brown base.
Sweep a matte brown eyeshadow stick across your eyelids to create the base color. Once it’s on, use a clean fluffy brush to blend it out so the edges look soft and diffused rather than too precise.
2. Layer in taupe for dimension.
Next, tap a taupe shadow over the brown using your fingertip to add a cooler, more muted tone. For soft but sculpted depth, go with a slightly lighter taupe in the center or lower part of the lid, then lightly smudge a little underneath your eyes so everything feels balanced.
3. Create the signature double wing.
Using the Wing Magician Silicone Guide, or even a small piece of tape, draw a sharp wing from your upper lash line, extending it past the outer corner of your eye. Then trace your lower lash line outward into a second wing, matching the top as closely as possible in length and shape. The two lines should sit close together without fully connecting.
4. Sharpen everything.
Use the Flik Eraser to clean the edges of your wings. A pointed cotton swab with a little makeup remover also works.
5. Add tubing mascara.
To get that lifted, almost doll-like lash effect, apply a lengthening tubing mascara and let each coat dry for a few seconds before adding another. This keeps the lashes looking long and separated.
Can you do an even quicker version of this?
You don’t have to do eyeshadow at all for it to feel finished or intentional. Skipping eyeshadow actually simplifies everything and puts all the focus on the eyeliner itself, which can look cleaner when it’s done well. As someone who wears a theatrical cat eye pretty much every day, I’ve found that with enough practice, a guide stops being necessary altogether.
To keep your makeup from moving throughout the day, especially if your liner isn’t waterproof, a setting spray becomes the main step that helps everything stay locked in. A widely used option, and one of my personal favorites, is the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, which helps seal your makeup in place so it doesn’t fade or transfer as quickly.
