You’re either a Whopper person or a Big Mac person. (Don’t argue with me; you already know which side you’re on.) But even the most committed burger fan has opinions on how things could be better. In fact, Burger King die-hards have been sounding the alarm on a few problems with their beloved burger for a full decade.
Well, the powers-that-be have finally listened. Burger King recently announced that some pretty big upgrades are in the works—the first changes to the Whopper in a whopping 10 years!—and they just might be enough to make Big Mac aficionados rethink their favorite order.
So what’s going on, and when can you expect to see an upgraded Whopper on BK’s menu? Read on to find out.

What is happening to the Whopper?

Burger King’s goal is make this signature item better without reinventing it. And again, the company is taking aim at elements that customers have been complaining about for ages. Here’s the breakdown:
- The sesame-seed bun will taste better, as well as be more durable. Say goodbye to soggy and limp buns!
- The mayo will be smoother and more flavorful.
- The toppings, from onions and tomatoes to lettuce and pickles, will be stacked more thoughtfully, so the burger will look and feel fresher when it lands in your hands.
- Instead of the old paper wrap, the Whopper will now come in a box. That means there’s less chance that it will be squished or fall apart.
Why is Burger King making this change now?
Even though the Whopper is iconic, Burger King hasn’t been dominating the burger world in recent years. In the 2025 QSR rankings, McDonald’s led by a wide margin, Wendy’s was ahead of BK in U.S. burger sales, and Burger King trailed behind both. Meanwhile, consumer surveys showed more people think first of McDonald’s or Chick-fil-A when deciding where to eat.
Plus, fans haven’t been shy about their burger frustrations. “The Whopper is an icon, so we didn’t set out to reinvent it,” said Tom Curtis, president of Burger King U.S. & Canada, in a press release. “Instead, we elevated it based on direct guest feedback.”

As with any change, people have opinions. First up: those who love the upgrade. On TikTok, user @waynedang was clearly thrilled: “You can definitely tell the difference—the bun game is fantastic! … It’s a lot more soft, a lot more cloud-like, a lot more fresh,” he said, before rhapsodizing about the mayo as well. “Making those small changes definitely makes a lot of impact.”
That said, Reddit users were skeptical, with one saying, “Other than the box, it seemed exactly the same as normal. Had no clue they changed anything until now.” And TikToker @softcardigan said that it tasted “noticeably less tasty than I remember.” Hey, some people truly are loyalists!
Are the prices going up?
Despite all the changes to the Whopper, Burger King says prices aren’t going up. Surprisingly, your favorite burger will cost about the same as before, usually around $5 to $6, depending on the location.
When is the new Whopper coming to a Burger King near you?
Most locations should already have it. The changes were officially announced on Feb. 26, 2026, and BK says the revamped Whopper is rolling out across more than 7,000 restaurants right now. Since Burger King has roughly 7,700 U.S. locations, that’s nearly all restaurants nationwide.
It may take a few days or weeks for every spot to stock the new bun, mayo and boxed packaging, but if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s likely coming your way very soon.
