Why aren’t the burgers always fresh?
Keeping fast food fast isn’t always easy, and sometimes it comes at the cost of freshness. Because McDonald’s locations can get really busy, employees often make popular sandwiches and other menu items in advance to keep wait times down for customers. The end result is that the burgers aren’t always freshly cooked. That doesn’t mean they’ve been sitting out for hours, but they aren’t always made to order either.
What’s the phrase that will ensure a fresh burger?

To get a fresh burger every time you order from McDonald’s, order your burger “unseasoned,” according to former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz on TikTok. Yep, that phrasing is all it takes. That’s because when McDonald’s cooks prepare their burgers, they always follow McDonald’s recipe, which includes seasoning the meat patties with salt and pepper. By asking for an “unseasoned” burger, the cooks will inevitably have to make it fresh.
FYI, the same applies to McDonald’s french fries, which are usually salted right out of the fryer. Just ask for your food with no seasoning, and it will be made fresh. It works every time!
Will this make your burger bland?
While ordering an “unseasoned” burger will ensure it’s made fresh, you might find that it’s a little bit bland without its usual salt and pepper. Can you add your own salt and pepper? Absolutely! But there’s definitely something to cooking the burger with salt and pepper that really locks in the flavor. For some, however, it’s a small price to pay for a super-fresh burger.
Are there any other tricks for getting a freshly cooked burger?
If you don’t mind your burger being unseasoned, then asking for it to be prepared this way is the one surefire way to get a freshly cooked burger. But if you’d prefer to have it cooked the original way, with salt and pepper, and still want it made fresh, all you have to do is ask! Tell the crew you’d like your burger “cooked to order” and they’ll make it fresh for you—you’ll just have to wait a few more minutes.
“Just ask nice and say you’re willing to wait,” says Haracz. “That’s the best way to do it and will be the least annoying, as the restaurant crew will probably know what you’re doing.”
Some people think that requesting special modifications to your burger, like no ketchup or extra pickles, is a guaranteed way to have it freshly made, but that’s not the case. According to Haracz, burger patties are cooked in batches and kept in a food warmer until the burgers are ready to be assembled. So even though your burger is customized, it won’t be freshly cooked.
