Big Changes Are Coming to Spirit Airlines—Here’s What to Know

Spirit Airlines has a reputation for many things: affordable airfare, an excellent safety record and a no-frills approach to your in-flight experience. Spirit was even ranked the best airline in the United States earlier this year, placing higher than airlines known for offering a more premium product, like Delta, American and United. Despite Spirit’s continued success (and its increasingly strict dress code), the budget-friendly airline is still striving to give its loyal fliers the best possible value. That’s why the airline is introducing some brand-new changes that will make flying Spirit Airlines even better than before.

Keep reading to find out which changes are headed to Spirit Airlines and when you’ll see them roll out across flights nationwide.

What are the changes?

Spirit Airlines is introducing two major changes, with the goal of bettering the overall customer experience: Go Comfy, which was introduced last fall, is getting a major improvement, and an Upgraded Free Spirit Loyalty Program. Since Spirit has never offered any onboard comfort options before—and the airline isn’t known for its extras—these additions are a really big deal!

Here’s what you can expect from these expanded options for Spirit passengers:

Go Comfy

Go Comfy, which was introduced last summer, just got a little roomier, to the tune of four extra inches of legroom on seats with a pitch of 32 inches. Aircraft will be outfitted with seven rows toward the front of the plane, and installation will begin in June. By the end of July 2025, the bulk of Spirit’s fleet will have these new, cozy seats, and the rest of the installations will be implemented by the end of 2026.

More legroom isn’t the only benefit coming to passengers who book Go Comfy seats. As was the case when the program was first introduced in August 2024, Go Comfy passengers will continue to get a free carry-on bag, no change or cancel fees, priority boarding and reserved overhead bin space, plus a snack and non-alcoholic beverage. Go Comfy tickets cost about $60 to $75 more than the lowest level of tickets, Go Savvy.

Upgraded Free Spirit Loyalty Program

Spirit is giving its Free Spirit Loyalty Program a makeover, which means Free Spirit Status members and Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard cardholders are getting even more benefits than ever before. For starters, there will be expanded redemption options, so Free Spirit members will be able to book premium travel options, including Go Comfy, in addition to standard airfare. They’ll also receive complimentary upgrades based on availability that will also extend to one guest on the same reservation.

One of the most valuable benefits that will be offered to Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard cardholders is two free checked bags. Plus, cardholders who get the brand-new Free Spirit Debit Card will earn Free Spirit points on everyday purchases, which they can redeem for flights. Award travel tickets will also include Group 2 Priority Boarding and a 25% rebate on any in-flight purchases.

When do the changes start?

If you’re excited to book your Go Comfy seat, break out your laptop and mobile phone, because those extra legroom seats are now bookable for travel starting on July 9, 2025. Updates to the Free Spirit loyalty program will become available starting in June. As for free checked bags for Travel More Mastercard cardholders, that perk will roll out in the second half of 2025, and the brand-new Free Spirit Debit Card will be released in the fall.

Will Cicadas Destroy Your Garden? 10 Things You Need to Know

It’s easy to wince thinking about the mass emergence of insects like cicadas. Their numbers can reach millions per acre, creating a near-deafening buzzing chorus. So it’s understandable that questions like, “Will cicadas eat my plants?” immediately spring to mind. But cicadas are also pretty fascinating and play important roles in the ecosystem. “Cicadas inspire wonder in our world!” says Jennifer Hopwood, senior pollinator conservation specialist at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. “They spend most of their life underground next to the same plant roots. Somehow, these creatures are able to track the years that pass by and time their emergence with other periodical cicadas in the region to overwhelm predators. They are amazing little critters.” Here’s a rundown of what to know about cicadas, good and bad, including whether or not they eat plants and how to protect your trees during an emergence.
