Don’t Make This Common Mistake with Your Laptop on a Plane
For most of us, time spent on a plane presents the perfect opportunity to use the in-flight Wi-Fi and catch up on some work or watch movies for hours on end. If that sounds familiar, you likely travel with your laptop, tablet or both. What in-flight laptop mistake will you regret?
If you fly with a laptop, don’t make the mistake of storing it in the seat pocket in front of you during your flight. The convenience may cost you the good condition of your computer.
We get it: The seat pocket seems like the perfect place to stow your laptop or tablet when you’re getting up to use the restroom, enjoying a snack or watching a movie. After all, you barely have to move to access it. But while those pockets are handy, they’re made to store emergency plans and other essential in-flight informationnot personal technology.
What can happen if you put your laptop in the seat pocket?
The consequences of stashing your laptop or tablet in an airplane seat pocket can be crushingliterally. Your devices may be damaged in there.
TikTok user Sabrina Chakici shared in a recent video that after storing her brand-new MacBook Pro in the seat pocket for a short time during her flight, she opened it to discover severe damage. According to Chakici, the pressure from the passenger in front of her reclining the seat was enough to crush and crack the laptop’s screen. While she had a hard-shell case on her laptop, it wasn’t durable enough to protect the screen from breaking.

That’s not the only reason to avoid storing your laptop in the seat pocket. Those compartments are notoriously dirty and covered with germs, as they are not necessarily sanitized between flights. In fact, the seat pocket may very well be the dirtiest part of an airplane seat. Avoiding it altogether is a great way to keep your laptop safe and reduce your chances of getting sick.
So where should you store your laptop when flying?
To arrive at your final destination with your laptop or tablet in working order, bypass the seat pocket and stash your device in your carry-on bag or under-seat luggage.
If possible, pack your laptop in a protective case or a bag that has a cushioned laptop pocket to protect it while you’re on the go. The same goes for tablets. Even though devices are getting smaller, and it may be tempting to just toss them in a purse, it’s still important to pack them properly to avoid damaging them during your travels.
