Once and future queen
Queen Elizabeth II has been around for almost everybody’s lifetime. At 95 years old, she is the longest-reigning British monarch ever—she took the throne at the age of 25 in 1952 and, come February 2022, she will have reigned for 70 years. Understandably, it’s hard to imagine what happens when the queen dies. Although her father died at the young age of 56, her mother lived to the ripe old age of 101, so longevity is in her blood.
Make no mistake, though: Although her engagements have been more limited of late as her heir, Prince Charles, takes on more responsibility, there’s little reason to believe the rumors about Queen Elizabeth stepping down. Despite her recent stint in the hospital in the fall of 2021, Prince Charles says his mother’s health is good—for now. “She’s alright, thank you very much,” he told Sky News in December 2021. “Once you get to 95, it’s not quite as easy as it used to be. It’s bad enough at 73.” [Prince Charles’s age at the time of the statement.]
If you’re wondering, “Will Prince Charles be king?” the answer is, eventually, yes—and then the line of succession for future generations will follow the royal family tree. As is the English way, though, there are careful plans for Queen Elizabeth’s passing to assure that the situation is handled gracefully, respectfully, and full of the pomp and ceremony the queen deserves.
